ASL 10 Course Description

Everyday communication is the centerpiece of every lesson. Topics revolve around sharing information about our environment and us. Grammar is introduced in context, with an emphasis on developing question and answering skills. You learn conversational strategies to help you maintain a conversation. Interaction activities allow you to rehearse what you’ve learned.

Approach

The curriculum parallels what we know about language development and second language learning. We focus on introducing language in context and reinforcing what is learned by engaging you into various interactive activities. A conversational curriculum requires you to be an active learner. You need to come prepared to sign with me and other classmates. Our classes are conducted in American Sign Language (ASL) from the very first day.

Taken from:  Signing Naturally,  Lessons 1 - 6;  Cheri Smith, Ella Mae Lentz, Ken Mikos

Curriculum Design

The foundational objectives for this course was provided by the Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes (January 2009) for American Sign Language and Deaf Culture (ASL & DC) Manitoba (DRAFT) Grade 9 to Grade 12.

Indicators and outcomes are based on learning activities provided by the Master ASL Level One course (Sign Media, Inc, 2006) and the Signing Naturally series (DawnSign Press).  Additional indicators and outcomes were developed by Joanne Weber,  Deaf and Hard of Hearing Resource Room Teacher at Thom Collegiate.  Additional teaching resources in addition to those provided by the Signing Naturally Series will be used.
