ASL 10/20 Deaf Studies Assignment

1. Read a chapter from a book written by a Deaf person or a picture book about a Deaf person or about Deaf culture.  You may select any book from bookshelf in the DHH resource room.

2. Answer the following questions in English by making a 5 slide prezi presentation.  You will have to create an account at prezi.com.  Present your information in the order of the five slides provided below.  Your sentences can be presented in bulleted form but they must be complete sentences and grammatically correct.   

Presentation on book or excerpt about Deaf people, sign language or Deaf culture. Note:  This is a guided presentation format.  You should follow the structure of this outline. This is a complex outline that reflects the work of high school students.  By the time you graduate from high school, you should be able to write one of these presentations on your own.
Slide 1:  *
1		Indicate you are going to talk about a book or a selection from a book.  Provide name of author and title of the book
	2	Synopsis of the book and other important details
	2	How the d/Deaf are portrayed in the book
	2	Give your own opinon of the book – does it fit with  your own experience?
1		You will provide these three things (above) in the discussion of the book or excerpt.  Will now provide a synopsis of the book.

1		Synopsis of the book  (this is the heading of your slide)
	2	Is the author Deaf, deaf, hard of hearing or hearing?
	2	What is the book or excerpt about? Where is the excerpt in the book (page numbers)
	2	What is the most interesting part of this book for you?  Provide a quotation and explain why.
1T		Will now talk about how characters are portrayed.

	2	How are the characters portrayed?
	2	Give examples of where the character might have experienced audism
	2	Does  the excerpt provide an accurate portrayal of the Deaf experience? Why or why not?

4. Students enrolled in ASL 10 will present one slide in ASL and embed the video in the prezi presentation and send to joanneweber49@gmail.com.

5. Students enrolled in ASL 20  will present whole presentation in ASL (create five separate videos that go with each slide), embed the videos in the prezi presentation and send the video to joanneweber49@gmail.com. Copy the link of the presentation (in your browser window) and paste it in the email to me.

6. Students in pre-ASL classes will create vocabulary videos for the entire first unit (see checklists and video examples) beginning with the September entry at http://thomsign.blogspot.ca/2013/09/0102-ask-for-and-give-names.html
